Jane Tobinson: Good morning, Mr. Keating. I am glad to meet you.(Jane shakes hands with Mr. Keating and looks him in the eye with a big smile.)
Mr. Keating: Good morning, Ms. Robinson. Glad to meet you, too. Have a seat.
Jane Tobinson: Thanks.
Mr. Keating: Your resume, references, and DVD portfolio that you sent are very impressive. They’re why we picked you for an interview from the over 200 applicants. But I am wondering why you want this position, since you don’t have any actual work experience using the Infinite Magic software.
Jane Tobinson: Because this position is challenging, I love challenges. That’s why I was a runner while in high school and at the university. Besides, I am always willing to learn innovative ways to use computers. I wrote my first hyper media program in third grade. That was 13 years ago. You’ve seen my two most recent projects in my DVD portfolio. Though I don’t know the Infinite Magic software, I am a fast and dedicated learner. And I did some related part-time work for Synthetic Logic last summer.
Mr. Keating: Yes. I had a talk with Susan Nehru, your supervisor at Synthetic Logic. She used to work here six years ago. She was quite pleased with your intelligence and diligence.
Jane Tobinson: Ms Nehru is an excellent leader, and I enjoyed the stimulating work environment.
Mr. Keating: I was quite impressed by the writing you did for the university website. Is there anything else that I should consider?
Jane Tobinson: Perhaps, just as importantly, I am an artist. I know how to use color, depth, and conrasts. That, combined with my classes in making videos, gives me the ability to know what to use when designing educational software.
Mr. Keating: Yes. Your protfolio art projects in the DVD were nicely done.
Jane Tobinson: Thank you.
Mr. Keating: Which is more important to you, the salary or the position?
Jane Tobinson: The position is more important. Every day I spend most of my intellectual energy on whatever project I’m working on. If I don’t enjoy my job, I’m clearly wasting my time. But salary is important in that it shows how my abilities contribute to my company’s success in this highly competitive world of business.
Mr. Keating: May I ask you a personal question?
Jane Tobinson: Please do.
Mr. Keating: Are you married or thinking of getting married anytime soon?
Jane Tobinson: May I know your reason for this question?
Mr. Keating: This position requires a lot of travel to meet and work with different creative people across the world. Sometimes you might be away for weeks or even months at a time.
Jane Tobinson: That suits me just fine. Anyone involved with my personal life will just have to understand that part of my life includes extensive work-related travel.
Mr. Keating: Very good. Your interview is equal to your resume and portfolio. And since your portfolio and resume are clearly the best, I’m not planning on interviewing anyone else. I’ll recommend to the company president that you’re experienced and very creative. You also have the high energy and enthusiasm that this position absolutely requires. The president, Ms. Paula Ryan, will decide if you’re the right person for the position in a few days. As soom as she lets me know, I’ll call you.
Jane Tobinson: Thank you so much!
(Jane smiles, stands up, and shakes hands again with Mr. Keating as she gets ready to leave his office.)
Mr. Keating: My pleasure, Ms. Robinson. I hope you’ll be working with us soon.
Jane Tobinson: I’m looking forward to that opportunity!
Mr. Keating: Have a good day!
Jane Tobinson: Have a good day, Mr. Keating. Goodbye.
Mr. Keating: Good-bye, Ms. Robinson.
